Art Deco macassar ebony chrome & shagreen box

This absolutely fabulous box was made in the Art Deco period and probably in France. The box has been veneered with macassar ebony and is in the shape of a car. It has black lacquered wood wheels with chrome hubs for feet. The top has two hinged chrome lids that open to reveal two compartments that originally would probably have held cigarettes and matches. Between the compartments is a strip of shagreen that would have been used as a striker. This is one of those objects that makes you laugh with joy - a friend of ours described it as a "real belter" - how right he is!
